Merrimack Elementary School
Hometown:
Rochester, NY
Class Information:
Room Number: 205
Students per Class: 23
Class Description:
I have 23 wonderful students in my class all with very different needs, wishes, goals, and dreams. Our school is a Title I school with 90% free & reduced lunches. Many of my students have not been anywhere outside the borders of their city of Hampton but have dreams to someday make it out. Many of my students come from families that stuggle to make ends meet and do their best for their children.
Position:
Teacher
Needs:
My classroom and students have many needs (some of which are just basic everyday needs) but what I would really love to be able to provide to my students is a way and a tool in which to become good and productive citizens. Today's world is encompased by technology and many of my students must go to the local library to be able to have access to the use of a computer outside of the classroom. I would like to be able to show them how to use technology to better their lives and have them be prepared for their future, whatever they choose it to be. Having the ability to use and understand technology will give them a better chance to be a competator in today's world.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I am a 5th grade teacher at Merrimack Elementary school in Hampton, VA. I have been teaching here for 5 years. I use to teach technology and 4th and 5th grade science in Rochester, NY. I have 3 wonderful children who are very successful. My husband is an entertainer and is my backbone, my right arm, and my stress reliever.
College and Degrees:
I have a BS in Speech Pathology and a Masters degree in Elementary Education both from Nazareth College in Rochester, NY
Activities:
I love to sing with my husband's band, do all kinds of things on the computer (yes I even have a "myspace" account), I love working in my garden, doing cross-stitching, and hanging out with friends.
Favorite Books:
The whole Harry Potter Series and I also love Barbara Delinsky books. Also love to just sit and read magazines (I think I have a subscription to about 10 of them)
Favorite Quotes:
"2 wrongs don't make a right"--my mom
Interests:
Gardening, computers, singing, kids, shopping (looking for bargins), teaching!
Employment History:
I started out as a substitute (haven't we all?) and then went to being a teacher's aid in a 6th/7th grade class (made me realize that I needed to be in the elementary school). I got my dream job working in a computer lab for grades K-5 teaching both students and teachers, putting together lesson plans for teachers, coming up with ideas to integrate technology with the curriculum. I did that for 3 years and moved to teaching 4th and 5th grade Science which I did for 3 years. Then, realized that I had to move away from the cold and gloom of upstate NY and moved down South where I am now teaching 5th grade and I love it. I face many many challenges that I never delt with in NY but I feel like this has been the most rewarding experience I have ever had.
Why Do I Teach?:
Because I know I am making a difference. I have had many of my past students come and visit and tell me "Thank you. You turned my life around." "I'm doing good in school because of you." I try to become close to my students both in the classroom and outside of it too. A lot of my students do not have the support they need at home so I try to show them that I am there for them. I have gone to many football games, cheerleading competitions, and even tutored one of my students at home for a week even after he was suspended from school. I want them to know that I will not give up on them, no matter what and that I care. When people ask me how many children I have I always say 23 here, 3 in NY. :)
