East Hancock Elementary School
Class Information:
Room Number: 209
Students per Class: 37
Class Description:
I teach 4th grade gifted education students. They come to me one day a week for complete immersion in an intellectually gifted program. We work on critical thinking, creative problem solving, research skills, and interdisciplinaryconnections. Each year we choose a specific theme to address, this year it is "Medieval times". We have made castles, dressed knights, attended a Renaiisance fair, and had mock joustings. The kids are learning so much about history and social studies. This thematic learning is something completely different than what is taught in the regular ed. classrooms. Although we coordinate concepts and skills, we teach the students to approach tasks through alternative methods analyzing data and sequence as they go.
Position:
Gifted Ed. teacher
Needs:
We routinely need to record activities, projects, process skills, etc.. A digital camcorder would definitely fill our need to document spontaneously. The dvd's could also be shared at staff development and with parents making it an ideal utensil for our needs in the gifted classroom.
My Philosophy:
Kids learn my doing. I think immersing students in the process cements the importance and the methods used in education. In this time of extreme technology, teachers need to expand beyond the desk and the textbook. I want to give all my students that opportunity.
