Class Description:
I teach students with significant orthopedic and cognitive delays in a self contained classroom. My students stay with me for 1-4 years depending on their grade levels. We develop a strong familial community among the students.
Position:
Special Ed. Teacher
Needs:
My students have difficulities accessing typical classroom materials due to their delays. They need materials that allow them to explore academic skills and to develop independent skills.
My Philosophy:
I take a hands on approach to learning using a variety of high interest materials and a lot of opportunities to practice skills. I incorporate reading, writing and math skills with functional skills such as cooking and community field trips. I encourage families to participate in classroom activities such as a Thanksgiving dinner prepared by the students.
Personal Information:
About Me:
I have been teaching children with special needs for 14+ years and cannot imagine working anywhere else.
Why Do I Teach?:
Anyone who enters my classroom knows why I teach. My students have significant orthopedic and cognitive delays. They light up with excitement when they learn something new or demonstrate a skill we've been working on. Their passion for learning is contagious and I can't imagine being anywhere else. Their challenges become my challenges and their successes make me burst with pride.
