The human patient simulator is a technologically advanced mannequin which is fully integrated with computer software that supports development of preplanned scenarios that mimic REAL WORLD medical/traumatic emergencies and clinical situations. The simulator is able to produce lung, heart and bowel sounds, bilateral blood pressures & pulses, produce five lead ECGs, and even produce blood and urine. The advanced technology also allows the simulator to respond to pharmacological interventions with expected physiological responses. The simulator can be programmed to communicate verbally with its user, this is a crucial aspect of patient assessment for students to learn.

A human patient simulator is not just another teaching tool, it is a technologically advanced teaching method that allows all types of healthcare students and providers to refine and apply their skills in a realistic healthcare situation and participate in learning experiences tailored to their educational needs. Simulated patient care scenarios relevant to an actual patient population within a specific clinical learning environment helps students and clinicians to learn skills, gain experience and develop competencies as well as confidence. Learning is achieved without the fear of harming real patients.

The Waldo County Technical Center (WCTC) is proud to serve the residents of Waldo County, and is committed to providing quality educational programs to high school students from RSU 20 (Belfast/Searsport) and SAD 3 (Mt. View). WCTC proudly also serves the residents of the 25 towns in Waldo County through adult education programs and healthcare and emergency services training programs which utilize WCTC educational environment.

Healthcare & Emergency Services is a growing industry nationwide, it is also a growing area at WCTC. Currently, WCTC offers a variety of programs which focus on this growing industry. The Emergency Medical Services program, which prepares high school students for careers in prehospital emergency medicine, is gearing up for its fifth year of success at WCTC. Students enrolled in the EMS program earn their EMT-Basic certification, in addition to exploring other aspects of emergency medicine, all while earning college credit. The emergency services program also offers a Fire Science Technology program which is geared for students who are interested in the fire service. These students also focus on basic first aid and CPR as a core portion of their training. WCTC also offers students an opportunity to take a Health Science Careers course. This course is designed for students who are looking to pursue other careers in the healthcare industry such as nursing and allied health professionals. Student can elect to complete their certified nursing assistant certification while enrolled in the Health Science Careers program.

WCTC’s adult education program also focuses meeting the growing needs of not only the residents ofWaldo County but also the local businesses. The adult education CNA (certified nursing assistant) course is offered twice a year with a full enrollment. EMS education is also offered as part of the adult education program. Each year an evening EMT certification course is offered to assist in the growing needs of local ambulance services.

The programs listed above however are not the only ones who will benefit from this grant. The University of Maine – Hutchinson Center’s nursing program holds their practical lab course at WCTC during the fall semester. Nursing students utilize all of WCTC training materials in order to provide their students with a hands on educational opportunity in a controlled setting. The benefits from this grant will go even farther. Due to the limited educational resources for healthcare providers in Waldo County, WCTC will be able to make the human patient simulator available to EMS services and their providers, the hospital staff (nurses, physicians, allied health personnel) at Waldo County General Hospital, as well medical staff at area community health centers.
