Detroit Day School for the Deaf has initiated a garden-based learning program for middle school students. The program includes developing a butterfly habitat, visiting urban gardens and Michigan State University gardens. Additionally students help write grants and request donations to beautify the school grounds and create outdoor learning center areas.

Objective: Students will create a "documentary" of their participation in
garden-based learning at DDSD.

Materials: digital cameras, e-mac or other computer with i-dvd/i-photo
software, DVD-RWs

Procedure: Students take turns as "photographer" following 4-H Curriculum
used in Art Class for teaching Photography (available on-line
through local 4-H offices). They will:

follow care and use instrucions for digital camera

take a variety of pictures during field trips, planning sessions,
and working on developing garden areas

use i-photo to edit pictures using proper cropping and
enhancements if necessary

import photos to i-dvd or i-movie in the correct manner
to "tell the story" of the gardening program.

share the the dvd with students, staff and program
administrators

seek air time for dvd on cable network and share with
donors and the deaf school they support in Hoduras.

Evaluation: completed work.
