Grades 9 through 12
School: East Side High School, Newark, NJ
Planned By: Mario J. Pedro
Original Author: Mario J. Pedro, Newark
Activity 1: Students will review various examples of Pictures Prompts formerly used when practicing for High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) in the state of NJ. Students will be asked to note any patterns they see as well as detail what they like and don't like about the selected pictures.

Activity 2: Students will select 1 of the pictures and write an essay utilizing the picture. Students will be assessed using the standard HSPA rubric.

Activity 3: Students will be asked to bring in their digital cameras, if they have one, and we will travel around the school building, and outside of the building (there is a park in front of the school) and take pictures they feel would make good picture prompts. Once we return to the computer lab, students will upload the pictures they took onto a folder in their documents folder and create a power point presentation of all the pictures.

Activity 4: Students will review their pictures and select the top 3 they prefer. They will be asked to discuss why they selected the picture and why they feel it would make a good picture prompt. After all students have presented, the class will come to a consensus and select the top 3 of the class. Then they will write a persuasive letter to the Chairperson of the English Deptartment. detailing why the department should use the selected pictures.
Follow-Up
Students will be asked to follow-up with the department chair of the English department to see if their pictures were used for pictures prompts throughout the school. If so, I will ask students to ask for copies of those essays and see the kinds of stories that their pictures enabled.
