While students are completing a project other students
are recording the process and creating a "How to Map-it" pamphlet or slideshow.
The Map-it project:
After reading everybody books that are related to real
geographical places, students use atlases and the internet
to discover each book's geographical location.

For example, books may be:
folklore(Why Misquiotes Buzz in People's Ears-West Africa);
animal stories(Orca-killer whales, oceans);
cultural tales (Ruby's Wish-China); and
historical tales(Grandfather's Journey-Japan & California).

Students search the web for maps giving specific details of the geographical location(s) in the books. Since the maps will have to fit in the book, students must crop, shrink, enlarge etc. until a clear map is published.
Students label the maps with details necessary to communicate their signifigance to each book. Carefully, students use rubber cement to glue the completed maps inside the front of the books.

The second project:
Student photo-journalists capture the process and publish a pamphlet describing how to complete a "map-it" project.
(Alternative: Students create a slideshow.)
