The students will research in-depth the plight of the Diamond Backed Terrapins. They will use Creative Problem Solving to determine the most appropriate school awareness, community actions, and legislative actions in order to protect them.

The students will gather information from many sources in order to best complete our tasks.

Several possible outcomes involve the use of cameras and technology. It is my wish that the students photograph Diamond Backed Terrapins at the N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher to use in the following actions. Book illustrations, posters, and brochures are several of the proposed applications.

School Awareness Actions

1. Author a primary leveled reading book telling the plight of the Diamond Backed Terrapins.
2. Make posters to encourage the school community to enter a letter writing campaign to save the Diamond Backed Terrapins.
3. Design and prepare a tri-fold board for display in the library promoting the Save the Diamond Backed Terrapins Campaign.
4. Write and produce a short video to educate the school community on the importance of writing letters to various agencies promoting the Save the Diamond Backed Terrapins Campaign.
5. Investigate the history of the Diamond Backed Terrapins and author an historical fiction book with a Terrapin as the main character.
6. Prepare a presentation for the Earth Day Celebration at Wrightsville Beach School with a Powerpoint presentation.
7. Design and make a game for each classroom to teach students about the plight of the Diamond Backed Terrapins.

Community Awareness Actions

1. Design a brochure to be placed at the N. C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher and other locations to educate the public on the plight of the Diamond Backed Terrapins.
2. Write and produce a short public awareness video to educate the public on the plight of the Diamond Backed Terrapins.
3. Design a marketable product to fund the Save the Diamond Backed Terrapin Campaign.
4. Design a Powerpoint presentation to use as a tool to share the Save the Diamond Backed Terrapin on Human Relations Day.
5. Promote a letter writing campaign to the Wrightsville Beach Board of Alderman to ensure that the marsh area around Wrightsville Beach School is a protected area.

Legislative Actions

1. 4th: After investigating how a bill becomes a law, support and petition for legislation making exclusion devices mandatory on recreational crab traps in North Carolina.
2. 5th: After investigating how a bill becomes a law, support and petition for legislation making exclusion devices mandatory on recreational crab traps in the United States.
3. Involve the community and school community in a letter writing campaign to promote legislation making exclusion devices mandatory on recreational crab traps both in North Carolina and nationwide.

Each team will include at lease one technology component, 2 written components, a display board, and an oral presentation by the entire team in their action plans. I know that we are going to accomplish great things on behalf of the Diamond Backed Terrapins. We are their voices, and together we will be heard.
