Subject(s): History, English/Language Arts, Photography, Social Studies, Writing, Art
Grades K through 6
School: College Gate Elementary School, Anchorage, AK
Planned By: Dona Helmer
Original Author: al haskvitz, Walnut
Objective: To create a display of what the statehood means to those who are living in it on the 50th anniversary of entry into the United States.

Process:
Students view the video on this history of the state.

Discuss the meaning of statehood and the responsibilies of citizens: the role of the state constitution and the relationship of a state to the federal government.

Brainstorm the type of photographs that would demonstrate the concept of being a state or the notion of celebration. Discuss what makes a photograph interesting--the fact that it tells a story and then teach students how to caption a photograph.

Next, interested students would be loaned digital cameras to take photos of what the their state means to them. There would be three rules that apply. Those who take pictures of people must have a written okay from those individuals. Secondly, the photographers must have a reason why the picture is important. This is vital for it makes the lesson more integrative and requires more thought in the photo selection. Finally, the format submitted must by the same jpeg format.

The photos submitted will be judged by a group of students, faculty and community members and placed on the school website.

The rules will be distributed to those interested. The loaning of the digital cameras will be done at College Gate Elementary School with identification. The construction of the website will be done by library club students with help from the PTA/ community.

Cross-Curriculum Ideas
The librarian will work with the technology and computer teachers, the art teacher, the language arts teachers, and the social studies teachers as well as community leaders. They will collaboratively articulate learning objectives to use in their lesson plans and will work with community members who will serve as judges.
