Grades K through 12
School: Brookside Middle School, Sarasota, FL
Planned By: Cyndi Pelosi
Original Author: Cyndi Pelosi, Sarasota
Objectives:
1. to increase the reading skills of striving readers
2. to have students model the reading skills learned
3. to have students record both with the camera and journaling the reading skills learned
4. to increase the self-esteem of striving readers

Students will be explicitly taught 12 Reading Strategies--visualizing, rereading, retelling, write, notice patterns, notice print conventions, vocabulary, stop and think, adjust reading rate, chunking, mark up the text, and process of elimination.

After the instruction and practice of each strategy including the use of the University of Kansas Content Enhancement Routines: Unit Organizer, Recall Enhancement Routine, Frame Routine, etc., each student will be given a scrapbook to personalize. After the scrapbook is personalized, each student will be given the opportunity to model each of the 12 strategies for the camera. After the picture is printed and cropped, students will place the picture in the scrapbook with journaling to describe the how and why that specific strategy is so important.

Students will also scrapbook pages of the books read throughout the school year with the title, author, lexile level, test grade, book report grade, genre, theme, plot, setting, characters, etc. of each book, taking a page in the scrapbook. They will list the Reading Strategies used to successfully read the book with some specific examples of the text. They will also have a page for their favorite book or favorite author with additional information.

At the end of the unit and the end of the school year, students will share their scrapbooks with the class, their families, and other reading classes to show what they have learned and how they apply what they have learned to reading on our Family Reading Night.
