Grades 6 through 12
School: Immaculate Conception School, O Fallon, MO
Planned By: Diane Tucci
Original Author: Diane Tucci, O Fallon
After students study the historical background of World War II, the students will read "Hana's Suitcase" aloud, in reading groups, silently, and listening to it read to them. During that time, a journal will be given to each student to use as an emotional outlet. He/she will be encouraged to use this journal to react in the form of writing words, sentences, notes, poems, drawings - any form of expression. These will be kept private, but available for the teacher and for them to discuss, if they choose so.
Upon completion of the novel, the students will use Inspiration to develop reactions from their journals. Each student will be asked to create a poetry form, a lyric to a song, or a letter to someone of the future regarding their reactions to this work. Appropriate artwork will decorate this reaction. These works will be published on MIcrosoft Word.
The final works will be displayed in a "Tolerance Museum" in my classroom for the school to visit. Hopefully, all will appreciate the need for tolerance in our world.
