Students begin with a study on watersheds(or wetlands.) Then they are given the list of possible jobs at the wetalnds site. Students research these positions and what they entail. (Choices amy include: botany, zoololgy, marine biology, trashology, soil experts, hydrologists, photojournalists, videograhers, etc.) They then write a 2 paragraph application for 2 of the positions. The first paragraph explains why they have chosen this job and the second explains what qualifications they have that recommend them for this job. It should impress the socks off the "boss"...their teacher. Once students have been interviewed for and received a position, they will take a preview trip so that each group may plan their next 3 trips which will be separated by 1 month each. The students will learn how to use all available tools and technology(like: GPS, PASCO prbeware, ph meters, cameras, etc.) to help them complete their longterm study of the area. The students will set up team binders in which to write plans, list jobs and record both qualitative and quantitative data about the area. Students will then do their jobs each trip, and then compare/contrast the data they collect. They will draw conclusions and make suggestions about the stewardship of the wetlands area in a paper...one per team. The culminating experience will be to present this infromation to the rest of the school, the parents and other invited guests at a big exposition w/ graphs, photos, tools, etc. |

This is the best activity I've ever done with students in my 23 years of teaching. It is real...not contrived, and kids love that. They learn and retain the information extremely well! |
