Planned By: Elizabeth Prince
Original Author: Elizabeth Prince, Southaven
Independently, students list anything they know, or think they know, about Pakistan and Afghanistan. Then they get with a partner or small group to compare ideas and grow their list. As a whole class, students create a KWL chart, filling out the first column with what they know about Pakistan and Afghanistan. Then they fill in the middle column with what they want to know about these two countries. Students then submit to their teacher what they want to learn more about through research. The teacher forms groups, and students are expected to complete their research.

In class, students are given days their group will use the computer to locate information and work on their final product, a PowerPoint. Other days groups are expected to research in books gathered from the library.

The final product, a PowerPoint of 12-15 slides, is presented to the whole class. Students are able to show their creativity and hard work through their PowerPoint.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
The lesson can include researching the geography and historical aspects of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Also, students are reading a book and writing about their research and findings.
Follow-Up
After the presentations are complete, students will finish the KWL chart by filling in what they learned from the research. Additional information can be added as they read the book. Refer to the chart while reading.
