School: Hasty Elementary School, Thomasville, NC
Planned By: Debra Dawson
Original Author: Debra Dawson, Thomasville
I started this year skyping with kindergarten children in other states. This brings the 21st century teaching and global awareness to my children. I have twenty children in my classroom. If I had ten flip cameras, I could create ten teams--two children on a team. One student would be the designated cameraman and the other would be narrator of the event. The students would be expected to research the topic they are going to be engaged in and write up a short script to use while filming. We skype regularly with a kindergarten class in Minnesota. This would be a great teaching/learning lesson for both classrooms as my students present their edited work to their skyping buddies.

1. In comparing weather, the children would capture some of our seasonal changes. In the Fall, show the leaves changing colors and in Spring the trees and flowers blooming while our skype buddies still have snow on the ground.

2. We would use it to observe day by day butterfly development from the egg all the way through the metamorphosis to a butterfly. We would capture each of the stages including the day they are released. Also, film the kill deer birds in our courtyard and show how the birds protect their babies.

3. The children would capture our exciting adventures on our two field trips.

Currently, we have one flip camera that we share. The ten flip cameras would allow my children to work in groups which puts the teaching/learning back in their hands. It would give the students responsibilty for gathering and sharing the information. This is a great visual aid that would be very beneficial in many areas of learning.
Follow-Up
A great follow-up activity would be to have the children present some of their finished videos during a parent night. We also have a school-wide anchor show given from our media center each morning. We could allow a group at a time to
present their finished product to the school on morning announcements.
