Traditionally students will be given a battle from the Civil War. They will then have to research all the major historical figures from the battle and the battle itself. After completing their research students are then required to draw an oversized battle map. Included on the map are all the key historicial figures, the number of troops and artilery, and the major movements the two sides took during the fight.
As a way of differentiating this assignment I would offer my students the opportunity to visually depict their battle in a stop motion video. Throughout the years I have had students interested in making simple Youtube or stop motion videos, but have not had the technology that allows them that choice.
The final step in this lesson is the presentation of their map. They tell the story of their battle and debate the overall implication it had on the war as a whole
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
Science does a plate-tectonics lab that could incorporate simple stop-motion animation to depict this prinicple.
