School: Pompano Beach High School, Pompano Beach, FL
Planned By: Sandy Melillo
Original Author: Sandy Melillo, Pompano Beach
After studying a particular piece of literature, student groups will create a graphic novel denoting the highlights of the work. Working together to create a storyboard that will include planning shots and captions that focus on the key points, students will then gather or create costumes and props that will be appropriate for their shots. Using a digital camera, students will shoot pictures of them acting out the scenes they have chosen. They will upload the pictures using a computer, putting them into Comic Life or using the free, available photo programs such BeFunky.com that will "cartoonize" photos. The pictures will then be given the appropriate captions and printed out in color and bound as a graphic novel or scanned and put into a Powerpoint presentation. Students may also draw their own comics, scan them, print them, and make them into their own comic book.
Comments
Pictures can be scanned and saved a a Powerpoint on a flashdrive or a CD
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
This project is appropriate for all grade levels and content areas as students make create a historical newspaper, a science experiment, or a math progression by "cartoonizing" students in action.
Follow-Up
"Cartoonizing" students doing any project would be engaging to all ages, all curricula.
