The teacher will read aloud a given word problem:
"Today, we will work with word problems. Listed to the follwing word problem: A red plant is 1 foot tall on day one, 3 feet tall on day 2, 5 feet tall on day 3, 7 feet tall on day 4. A blue plant is 2 feet tall on day 1, 3 feet tall on day 2, 4 feet tall on day 3, 5 feet tall on day 4. On what day will the difference between the heights of the two plants be 5 feet? (Day 7).

Next, we will use Clip Art to illustrate the growth of the two plants visually. (Teacher models how to utilize Clipart to develop the problem.

Next, working in pairs, the students will solve 3 word problems, and then select one of the word problems to illustrate using Clipart.

Students will share their representations of their word problems to the class.

The targeted student population is students with disabilites receiving services in a resource classroom.
Cross-Curriculum Ideas
The concept of this lesson plan is targeted toward working with special needs students in a turorial classroom setting. The plan could be carried over into inclusion math settings also.
Follow-Up
Utilizing Clipart to illustrate ratio problems (solving to find a missing proportion). clipart could be used to represent 2 similar shapes, shrinking or enlarging a shape to develop the proportion representation.
