Pre-Assessment
Begin with a pre-assessment using the Socrative application to test students’ prior knowledge on the topic of introductory fraction concepts including a selection of test items that cover identifying fractions, equivalent fractions, comparing fractions, ordering fractions, and adding fractions. After analyzing results, focus on the areas of highest need for the coming lessons.

Activity 2: Identify and Create Fractions Using Models
After discussion of what fractions are, students will create fractions using unifix cubes, and also practice drawing models of fractions along with tutorials on the Khan Academy Application. For the last part of the lesson, I will introduce the idea of equivalent fractions using the Khan Academy video. Lastly, we will work together to create a class anchor chart of equivalent fractions we have discovered.

Activity 3: Comparing Fractions
To teach the concept of comparing fractions, students will work along with me to build fraction models with math manipulatives first. Then, students will work together to draw fraction circles using a drawing application of their choice (I like doodoo lite- terrible name, I know) and deciding which symbol to use to compare ( < > = ). Lastly, students will use the application OhNoFractions to practice the comparing fractions skill.

Activity 4: Ordering Fractions
Using the application Doodlecast Pro, I will teach a lesson on ordering fractions from least to greatest. After walking my students through a demonstration in which models of fractions are drawn and then put in order, they will try it on their own. I will give each student a paper with four fractions. They will then go to a quiet area in the classroom and create their own Doodlecast tutorial on ordering fractions. Lastly, students will pair up and watch eachother’s Doodlecasts and discuss, with eachother, if any changes need to be made.

Activity 5: Adding Fractions with Like Denominators
I will begin with a lesson on adding simple fractions with like denominators. After my lesson, students will work in groups and use the Futaba application to create their own custom math game questions. The questions will all focus on adding fractions. After creating their questions, they will swap iPads with another group and play the games in groups of four.

Ending Assessment
I will, again, use Socrative to create and give an end of unit assessment.
Follow-Up
Students can use the ipads for additional time practicing with these applications.
