The teacher will facilitate a classroom discussion about culture. What does it mean to have culture? How is it defined within the context of the world in general? Is it associated with money or similiar needs within a group of people? The students will be asked to think about their cultures. How do they identify themselves? Is it based upon the color of their skin only? Or do other factors dictate their culture? Students will be asked to write a short essay on themselves and their cultures. They will be required to do research about their heritage and family history using photographs and taped interviews. The teacher will provide mini-lessons on how to do research as part of the classroom instruction. The teacher is also responsible for generating a letter to the parents explaining the purpose of the project, which is to develop awareness of the different cultures of the classroom. After completing their research, the students will share their stories with the class through presentations using any visual/audio technology equipment. The teacher can get additional support from other staff such as the librarian and the computer technologist, if possible. After the presentations, the students will work together to create a book with their stories. This book will be printed and shared with the class by the teacher.
