Original Author: Tiffany Pace, S Charleston
During our unit on the Industrial Revolution, students will read "Immigrant Kids." Using their ipads students will research the lives of immigrants kids paying particular attention to the working conditions immigrant children faced using sites such as https://sites.google.com/site/immigration327/working-conditions-for-immigrants. Students will receive a graphic organizer that helps them focus their research.

Next students will brainstorm, using another graphic organizer, to create a business invention that would have helped immigrant kids. Students will then create an imovie on their invention using photographs they have taken of their invention drawings as well as photographs from the Internet.

The imovies will be presented to a panel of "sharks" for review using the rubric of whether the invention is relevant to the problem, how the invention alleviates the problem, and accessibility of the materials to create the invention. Students who do not succeed in a successful acceptance of their inventions must review their invention ideas, make changes, and re-present their ideas to the teacher.

Once students have created successful business ideas they must make an advertisement for their inventions using the video component on their ipads. These commercials will be shown in class.

This project encompasses several curriculum standards for fifth grade in the areas of social studies and english language arts.
Comments
