School: Peakview Elementary School, Aurora, CO
Planned By: Susan Ekblade
Original Author: Susan Ekblade, Aurora
grade level: 5th
subject: math , geometry

Common Core Standards:
4th grade: Draw and identify lines and angles, and classify shapes by properties of their lines and angles.
5th grade: 4. Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties.

Introduction: Project a photo of the Notre Dame de Paris to a smartboard or white board. Ask students if geometry was used to build it. Ask volunteers to come up to the board and trace where they see geometry in use. As they outline shapes, ask them to identify the shape, or its properties.

Guiding question: Where is geometry used in our world?

Task: Students will work in groups of 3 to complete a digital geometry scavenger hunt, analyzing and evaluating their choice of photos. Students can use the QR code to access a glossary of terms to assist them in their search.

As students finish their search, they can upload their pictures to their googldocs account, then create a slide show sharing their best examples.

Extension. Students can use pre-cut geometric shapes of construction paper to construct a building, identifying shapes/terms used.

Comments
I have created a document of possible terms to look for and photoggraph. I have also created a QR code that links to a tutorial of geometry terms for students needing differentiation as they go along.

Follow-Up
Shown pictures of famous buildings, students will identify key geometric shapes used in design and construction.
Students can use two dimensional geometric shapes of paper to create own buildings, labeling terms.
