Preparation: Teacher and teacher assistants will take pictures of students in real- life social situations, such as being able to walk in line. Pictures that show hall behavoirs, positive and negative such as hands at your side, using markings on the floor to use as a spacing guide, and walking on the right hand side of the hall. such as being too close, pushing, running ahead, kicking, touching, and making noise. Pictures will be printed out for use in lesson where a book will be created with pictures and story lines that show common skills students need.


Lesson - Circle time, reading time.

Show the pictures to the students in random order, just looking at the pictures. Talk about what is happening and how the students/teacher/community feel in each picture. Then, spread the pictures out so students can look at all of the pictures. Talk about sequence and order as we line up throughout the day in school. They can use their daily schedule as a graphic organizer to plan the story, and add going to lunch, going to special, going home, ect. Stuents will put the pictures in order to tell the story. For each picture that shows an inappropriate behavior, the students will find an appropriate behavior picture. Students will dictate story lines to the teacher/scribe to write to tell the social story.

Have higher functioning students type the words into the computer page from dictated sentences.

Print out and put the book together with student assistance. Read the story and discuss/quiz appropriate social behaviors as reading. In the future, students can read independently or teacher can read to a group as needed.

Teachers can adapt this plan to any social behaviors students are working on in their lives. I have found that students learn social skills they can use when the pictures are of themselves.

Pictures can be cut out, laminated, attached with velcro and used for matching skills and greater interest/motivation to learn the skill.
