School: Arrowhead Union High School, Hartland, WI
Planned By: Elizabeth Jorgensen
Original Author: Elizabeth Jorgensen, Hartland
In the hall, I hear students say fag and gay and homo. Our school has a campaign to end the R word (retard) but we currently have no campaign to end homophobia. My students want to write, illustrate and publish books that promote tolerance. They want to produce books that teach elementary school students the negative effects of bullying: feelings of sadness and loneliness, changes in sleep and eating, loss of interest, increased thoughts of suicide, lowered academic achievement, increased violence and impaired physical health. Some books will expose the harmful effects of bullying; other books will be about why kids bully and how to stop it.

Bullying and homophobia do not only hurt the students being bullied. There are also negative effects (of bullying) on the bully; bullies are more likely to abuse alcohol and drugs, get into fights, vandalize, drop out of school, have sex, be convicted of a crime, and even be abusive towards future romantic partners.

My high school students want to write books for children that will introduce them to the bystanders affect and how simply witnessing bullying can negatively impact a person.

Many elementary school students have not heard of (nor been around) someone who is gay. Through creating books on the the two tablets and publishing them electronically, elementary school students will be educated and persuaded to be more accepting, tolerant and open-minded.

Publishing the books electronically will bring this topic to life; it will also bring excitement to the students. The high school generated eBooks will be interactive, depending on the application students decide to use.

eBooks allow for greater interaction; they can be modified or differentiated for reading levels, they are environmentally friendly, there are no publishing costs, they save space, and they are instant. eBooks also have linking, audio and video capabilities. Further, eBooks are easily updatable. eBooks will not only engage the elementary school students but also introduce them to an important topic and ultimately decrease bullying and homophobia.
