Keywords: shapes, math, special needs, vocabulary, Bucket and Spade
Subject(s): Math, Special Needs
Grades 6 through 8
School: Gov Thomas Johnson Middle Sch, Frederick, MD
Planned By: Rebecca Lawrence
Original Author: Rebecca Lawrence, Frederick
I. CONTENT: I want my students to build their math concept and vocabulary development while using interactive software technology.
II. INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES:
• The student will correctly use positional language.
• The student will explore the properties of shapes.
III. INSTRUCTIONAL PROCEDURES:
• Introduction. Motivate the students by showing them a bucket, shovel and a beach-related object, like a seashell. Place the object under the bucket. Ask the students where the object is? Lead students to describe that the object is under the bucket. Tell students that you cannot wait for them to find some objects on the beach. Explain to the students that they will learn about words and shapes while using Bucket and Spade software.
• Activity. The student will use Bucket and Spade software.
IV. MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT:
• Tool Factory Bucket and Spade Software
• Computer
• Bucket, shovel, beach-related object
V. ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION:
• After using the Bucket and Spade software, show the students the bucket, shovel and beach-related object. Explain that they will play a game where the teacher will tell them where to put the object (using position language used in Bucket and Spade). Model first, and then tell the student where to place the object in relation to the bucket or shovel. Repeat using different vocabulary. Review by placing the object somewhere in relation to the bucket or shovel and have the students say where the object is.
Follow-Up
Reward the students for their successes with ice cream cones (just like Spade received). Use position words to guide the students in making their own ice cream cones.
